The crcCARE – GHD Peter Nadebaum Award for Excellence

Dr Peter Nadebaum, Senior Technical Director at GHD, has worked for more than 40 years in contaminated land assessment and remediation. His extensive experience spans health and environmental risk assessment, environmental management of industrial facilities, industrial waste and wastewater treatment, air emission assessment, design of air pollution control systems, environmental impact assessment, and statutory approvals for new facilities. Dr Nadebaum has also published and presented more than 200 papers.

Dr Nadebaum was the founder and inaugural President of the Australasian Land and Groundwater Association (ALGA) and a founding member and former Director of the CRC CARE. He has also played a longstanding role in advancing sustainable remediation practices, including as a founding member of SuRF ANZ and contributor to the development of ISO 18504 (Sustainable Remediation), now adopted as an Australian Standard.

Dr Nadebaum’s contribution to the contaminated land assessment and remediation profession, the broader industry, and environmental sustainability is unparalleled. In recognition of his outstanding contribution, crcCARE and GHD are pleased to announce the second crcCARE – GHD Peter Nadebaum Award for Excellence and are now inviting nominations.

Award Purpose

The crcCARE - GHD Peter Nadebaum Award for Excellence recognises individuals who have demonstrated outstanding technical, educational, and professional contributions to the field of contamination assessment, remediation, and environmental management. 

This prestigious award is open to professionals, consultants, students, and academics who have demonstrated thought leadership, innovation, and a commitment to delivering practical solutions to real-world environmental challenges.


Eligibility Criteria

  • Professional Standing: Open to professionals at all career stages, including consultants, students, researchers, and academics.
  • Field of Expertise: Applicants must be actively engaged in the field of contamination assessment, remediation, and environmental management.
  • Contributions: Demonstrated excellence in technical achievements, educational initiatives, or both.
  • Industry Impact: Evidence of significant contribution to the industry through research, publications, project delivery, or practical application.
  • Innovation: Demonstrated technical innovation and creative approaches to solving environmental challenges.
  • Thought Leadership: Recognised as a thought leader who has positively influenced the direction, understanding, and advancement of the field.


Nomination Process

  • Open Nominations: Nominations may be submitted by peers, mentors, colleagues, or through self-nomination.
  • Supporting Documentation: Each nomination must include a detailed outline of the nominee’s contributions, along with relevant supporting material such as project work, publications, research papers, case studies, or testimonials.


Selection Criteria

Nominees will be assessed against the following criteria:

  • Relevance: The extent to which the nominee’s work addresses current and emerging environmental challenges in contamination assessment, remediation, and management.
  • Originality: The degree of innovation, creativity, and originality demonstrated in developing technical solutions.
  • Impact: The measurable and practical impact of the nominee’s work on industry practices, environmental outcomes, or scientific advancement.
  • Presentation Skills: The ability to clearly and effectively communicate complex technical concepts, including the suitability to represent the field at national and international conferences.


Judging Panel

A panel comprising distinguished professionals and leading academics in the field of contamination assessment, remediation, and environmental management will review all nominations.

The panel will assess each submission against the published selection criteria and select the award recipient based on overall merit and demonstrated excellence.
